What would it take in our state for each district to have collaborative professional practices? Could districts share the experts they have say in math, art, music, science, and work together with a common set of strategies and assessments? Maybe it is a dream but just consider how powerful that could be? Would it work or should we just toss the idea? Continue

I appreciate all that has been accomplished at ASTE and every person that has supported this professional conference. In saying this I was disappointed in the first slide at the morning session and appreciate ASTE president making mention of it. As professionals in public schools we work with children in the use of correct language, then work with parents, and community members. We do not talk as the slide presented and should not endorse such actions since it speaks directly against what we sta… Continue
I am working on the reality of building a network of support that will help all rural school districts in Alaska continue to provide the quality services necessary for classroom success. I need your help with this project. I have a special blog that you can also respond to if you would. What services can we combine? What partnerships can we build? What video classes can we share? What can every support organization in Alaska continue to do in supporting the classroom instructional thread? http:/… Continue
Hi All! I keep meaning to expand this post into more of a 'unit'. For example, at the Yellowstone Site you can get all sorts of information on this wolf pack and probably use the data to make math lessons. And there is so much more information available about wolves. But here's what I've got so far. Please add any resources you know of, thanks : )
In the Valley of the Wolves is an outstanding documentary featuring the wolves… Continue

This is hilarious, as much as I love Apple products, this "news clip" was too good NOT to share. My favorite quotes were, "Nothing could be simpler than a single giant button" and "Now everything on your computer is only a few hundred clicks away". Prepare to be entertained . . .

Here's an interesting TED talk giving by Kevin Kelly (the founding executive editor of "Wired" magazine). He talks about where the Web has come in the past 5000 days and where it is going. It's worth the 20 minutes to watch all the way through.

WR 0.7 Demonstrates proper pencil grip upon prompting.
WR 1.6 Demonstrates proper pencil grip without teacher prompting.
This standard and age old expectation of elementary students has (in the past) been such a struggle for me and my students. It is so hard to get those little fingers to hold the pencil properly. As soon as I try help physically move their fingers, they stiffen up and it is virtually impossible to move one of those tiny fingers even a fraction of an inch. So, when I saw these,… Continue
One of the craziest things about setting up a kindergarten classroom is the number of times I need to write each child's name. Recognizing one's own name and the names of your classmates is a great way for students to start learn some of the basics of reading. So, I know it's important.
I start with the usual. Every one's name gets written on their nameplates that are taped down to their tables. I have learned over the years that their name must also be on their chair, so they don't accidentall… Continue
I love the ocean. When I visit, it is like my soul is slowly being reflected back to me. The isolation and the vitality, the wasteland of the sand or the stony loneliness of the rocks, slippery from algae and waves.
I've lived on both coasts. I grew up on the east coast, never more than 15 minutes from the beach. When I moved to Oregon, the ocean seemed so far, at least 90 minutes away by car. And the ocean was different, too. Everyone told me how beautiful the Pacific Ocean was, how impressive… Continue
I was looking for bird songs when I came across a site, the Quiet American. Most people make photo logs of their travels, this man makes sound logs. I stumbled into his field recordings of Vietnam. Birds, yes, but also Buddhist temple chants, street sounds of Saigon, and my favorite,
